Texas Exes with “The Rocket” Raise Funds for Scholarships
Burnt orange was the color of the night for the annual University of Texas at Austin, Texas Exes Houston Chapter Scholarship Dinner March 23rd event at River Oaks Country Club. The theme had a baseball feel since the honoree was baseball great and former UT baseball star Roger “The Rocket” Clemens, so the guys “pitched” their ties. Over 250 Longhorn supporters mixed and mingled including UT Austin Athletics Director, Chris Del Conte. There was something for everyone, including a Bourbon and Bubbles Pull, a game of Heads or Tails and a variety of auction items.
The UT Cheer squad started the evening with the Texas Fight Song playing, energizing the room. Chairs Ryan Bayer and Brock Niezgoda were pleased with the results of over $200,000 raised. The evening was led by emcee Bill Worrell, who himself is a legendary sports broadcaster. Also stepping up to speak to the crowd was the President of Texas Exes Houston Chapter, the largest Chapter in the country, Lewis Kasner. Chuck Harris, Executive Director of Texas Exes introduced student Travis Arnold who shared his inspiring story about overcoming cancer and the support of the scholarship from the organization to attend UT.
Paddles flew in the air for the Horns Up pledge, raising additional scholarship funds. The live auction was a huge success, especially the chance to play golf with Clemens. A video highlighting Clemens’ career of 24 incredible seasons as an 11-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, and winner of seven Cy Young Awards brought a standing ovation. The interview conducted by Worrell led the crowd thru Clemens’ career, with stories that entertained. Another standing ovation concluded the interview and guests joined together in song for The Eyes of Texas before heading home.
