Don’t You Know EaDo?

Houston’s East Downtown neighborhood, EaDo as it is perhaps better known, is a thriving spot. Do not be fooled by the nickname, this locale has something for casual city slickers and sophisticates alike to enjoy.

Where can you serve a volleyball and be served a drink? HTX Sports Creek. The facility allows players to participate in sporting matches and events while doubling as a post-game hangout. If a burger craving strikes, head to nearby Rodeo Goat where you will find inventive takes on the American classic with your choice of beef, chicken, turkey, veggie or quinoa patty. The Dallas-based eatery’s menu even includes nods to the city with a burger named after infamous news anchor Marvin Zindler and a shout out to River Oaks Country Club.

For fancier fare paired with your choice of a glass of wine or cocktail, Nancy’s Hustle fits the bill. The dinner service only restaurant’s menu divides plates into small, medium and large servings with unique offerings such as lamb dumplings with spicy tomato vinaigrette, labneh and lamb jus, Hiramasa crudo and hand cut spaghetti with fermented chili butter, crab, Parmesan and breadcrumbs. Cocktails or coffee? No need to decide, Around the Corner does both. The restored 1903 bungalow specializes in coffee and pastries during daytime service and moonlights as a chic cocktail bar and wine lounge for dinner. Fashion aficionados should keep Magpies & Peacocks on their radar. The nonprofit 501(c)3 design house calls the neighborhood home and is on a mission to nurture arts education, keep fashion out of landfills and give back to the community through upcycled clothing and accessories.

Of course, no Houston neighborhood would be complete without a taco joint. Brothers Taco Houseopens early (5:00am Monday-Friday!) and continues service until 3:00pm during the week and 1:00pm on the weekends. No judgment here if you grab a taco for both breakfast and lunch. Wash your tacos down with a libation from well-known 8th Wonder Brewery or Little Woodrow’s Eado. The former is known for their craft beer and the latter for their happy hour deals and fun events. The two join forces for crab racing on Tuesday nights hosted at Woodrow’s with beer specials from the neighboring brewery.

Ninfa’s Second Coming

Houston’s iconic The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation will open their second location at 1700 Post Oak Blvd in the BLVD Place development in May. Jason Gould, who hails from Australia with 27 years of restaurant experience, has been named Executive Chef of the Uptown eatery.

Before joining Legacy Restaurants, operator of both Ninfa’s and Antone’s Famous Po’Boys brands, Gould had most recently been corporate chef at Cyclone Anaya’s Mexican Kitchen. Since 2010, Gould managed the day-to-day operations of seven restaurants, assisted with construction oversight of five new locations and opened the now shuttered Rico’s Morning Noon Night in Midtown.

The Original Ninfa’s Uptown Houston will occupy the space formerly known as Peska and features the same lunch and dinner menu as The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation. The new location will operate seven days a week and feature a weekday breakfast menu, a convenient perk for nearby residents and office workers, in addition to the weekend brunch menu currently being offered at Navigation.
